What is the Advanced Technical Certificate - Professional Accountancy (CPA) program?

This unique program allows college-educated professionals to become Certified Public Accountants (CPA). Whether you’re making a career change or you need additional credit hours or refresher courses to prepare for the CPA exam, this program will help you meet all state requirements to work as a CPA upon passing the exam. You must have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline to be eligible for this program.

What will I learn?

You’ll get the preparation and practice you need to pass each section of the CPA exam, including upper-level accounting courses and advanced topics including auditing, financial accounting and reporting, taxation and accounting ethics, along with the business courses required to become licensed as a CPA.

What can I do with this course of study?

This program will prepare you to pass the CPA exam and to meet the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) educational requirements to become a licensed CPA and work as a certified public accountant.

What’s special about this program?

This program helps individuals with bachelor’s degrees earn the credentials they need to become a certified public accountant. It’s designed with the working professional in mind, so all classes are fully online to give you flexibility as you pursue your CPA. SAC also offers all the business courses you need to become licensed as a CPA.

Certificate Overview – 45 hours (all classes are fully online)

  • 30 hours of Upper-level accounting courses – including advanced topics in auditing, financial accounting and reporting, taxation, and accounting ethics
  • 3 hours of a research course in accounting/auditing/taxation
  • 3 hours of a technical writing for accountants’ course
  • 9 hours of business courses - to become licensed as a CPA you will also need 24 hours of business courses, which are offered at SAC and accepted by the TSBPA

Next Steps

You must have a bachelor’s degree (in any field) from a U.S. university.  If you have a degree from outside the U.S., additional steps need to be taken directly with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA).
